Trait: Synchronize Nature: Bold (+Def, - Atk) or Calm (+SDef, - Atk)
Item: Leftovers EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 6 SDef

Strategy:

Umbreon's strategy of trapping the opponent with Mean Look and Baton Passing to an opponent has remained virtually unchanged since the Advance generation. Use Mean Look to trap the opponent and use Baton Pass to transfer the trapping effect to another Pokémon on your team.

Being a team supporter, Umbreon is great with healing moves and Wish is one of the best. Not only does Wish heal itself, but it can also be used to heal other Pokémon on the team. You don't even need to Baton Pass it. Simply switch out after using Wish and it will automatically heal the next Pokémon that you switch in.

You have a few options to choose from for the last move. Taunt is there because any Pokémon with Roar or Whirlwind will screw up Umbreon's Mean Look + Baton Pass strategy. Taunt prevents the opponent from using non-damaging moves like Roar/Whirlwind for up to five turns, giving you plenty of time to finish setting up and Baton Pass away. Next we have Toxic, which can work with Mean Look to gradually weaken a trapped opponent. Finally there's Charm, which will sharply lower your opponent's Attack and allows you to pass more safely to your teammate.

For your EVs, always max out its HP. Then choose one of the defensive stats to focus on depending on your nature. If you're using Bold, you can max out its Defense EVs and if you're going Calm, you may decide to focus on Special Defense EVs.

TM12

Level 57
Trait: Synchronize Nature: Careful (+SDef, - Atk)
Item: Leftovers EVs: 252 HP / 6 Def / 252 SDef

Strategy:

Besides Mean Look, Curse is another Baton Passing option for Umbreon. Use Curse to boost your Attack and Defense. The drop in Speed doesn't matter since Umbreon is already slow anyways. Once you have enough boosts, pass to a physical sweeper on your team that doesn't mind the Speed drop.

Payback is an option here because an Umbreon with one or two Curses can actually do some pretty serious damage with this move. While normally a weak 50 base power move, Payback achieves 100 power if the opponent attacks Umbreon beforehand. Since Umbreon will almost always go last with this set, it will usually get the power boost. This lets it beat most opponents with weak Defense and also gives it an offensive move against enemies that try to mess up your strategy with Taunt.

Again, your fourth move depends on what's more important to you. Wish is very important for keeping Umbreon alive, especially if it has taken a lot of hits while Cursing. Taunt is for those pesky phazers (Whirlwind and Roar will always go last, so you can Taunt them no matter how slow you are). Mean Look can help trap an opponent that won't do much damage to you, allowing you to Curse without fear of facing any super strong moves.

Though we're talking a lot about Defense, you still shouldn't neglect its Special Defense. Use a Careful nature and max out its HP and Special Defense EVs. With a total of 394 in both HP and Special Defense, almost no special attacker will defeat it.

Other options: Pursuit (Level 15), Moonlight (Level 71), Yawn (breed with Bidoof, Dunsparce, Hippopotas, Slakoth, or Wooper), Screech (Level 64), Fake Tears (breed with Mawile or Teddiursa), Tickle (breed with Aipom), Swagger (Emerald Move Tutor), Psych Up (Emerald Move Tutor), Protect (TM17)

Umbreon has almost no offensive attacks worth using. The only one besides Payback that might work is Pursuit, which can be useful to strike Psychic and Ghost types like Alakazam and Gengar if they switch out. Don't expect an OHKO though. Umbreon's Attack stat is really low.

It's Umbreon's movepool that really shines. There are a wide variety of moves that Umbreon can use to either help itself or cripple the opponent.

Moonlight is a nice instant healing move. However, the reason Moonlight isn't as good as Wish is because it can't heal other Pokemon on your team, has low PP, and it gets in a Sandstorm (which is a very common weather effect).

Yawn is Umbreon's only way to put an opponent to sleep and will more often than not force them to switch. But if you trap them with Mean Look, there's no way for them to avoid falling asleep.

Stat-lowering moves like Screech, Fake Tears, and Tickle can also be used. Screech lowers your opponent's Defense by two stages, Fake Tears lowers by Special Defenses two stages, and Tickle lowers Attack and Defense by one stage. These moves can help make your enemy easier to defeat.

The Swagger + Psych Up combo is a rather interesting and pretty risky move. First use Swagger on your opponent then copy the Attack boost with Psych Up. Afterwards, Baton Pass to one of your physical attackers. Be careful not to use Swagger against a physical opponent or else you'll actually be helping them out.

Protect rounds out Umbreon's list of options. Protect can have three uses - ensure that Wish heals you on your next turn, stall for a turn to heal some HP with Leftovers, or check what moves your opponent is using.

How to counter Umbreon:

Since this Dark Eeveelution has almost no physical power, just about every Fighting type can safely switch into Umbreon. Heracross, Hariyama, and Machamp get special recognition since they have the Guts ability, allowing them to get an Attack boost should they switch into a Toxic. Breloom is another great counter. With Poison Heal, it benefits from Toxic and can put Umbreon to sleep with Spore, preventing it from doing anything else.

Besides Fighting types, plenty of other Pokemon have no problem with Umbreon. Gyarados and Tyranitar are faster than Umbreons that don't invest in any Speed EVs and can use the oppurtunity to shut it down with Taunt before setting up with Dragon Dance. Other Taunt users can also foil its strategies. Metagross is immune to Toxic and Charm and can deliver a powerful blow with a Choice Banded Meteor Mash.

Substitute blocks just about everything Umbreon can throw at an opponent, including Mean Look. Even worse is when the opponent packs Focus Punch to hit from behind a Sub.
