IVs
When you catch two Pokémon of the same species, you may notice that they have slightly different stats even though they are at the same level.

One reason behind this is that the two Pokémon have different IVs.

What are IVs?
IVs are "invisible" numbers that tell how good each of your Pokémon's six stats are (HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed). They are "invisible" because you cannot see these numbers on your Pokémon's stat screen in your game. The only way to know the value of these numbers is by doing outside research, but we'll get to that later.

IVs range from 0 to 31. 0 means that particular Pokémon's stat is the worst it can be. 31 means that stat is at its best and is considered a perfect IV.

What's the difference between IVs and EVs?
EVs are are adjustable in any way you wish. IVs are determined as soon as you encounter the Pokémon (either by meeting them in the wild or by obtaining them as an egg when you breed). That means you cannot change a Pokémon's IVs once you get it.

How do I get good IVs?
Unfortunately, IVs are completely random for each of your Pokémon's stats. That means you may get good IVs for your Attack and Defense, but bad IVs for the other four stats.

Since IVs range from 0 to 31, you have a 1 in 32 chance of getting a perfect IV for one stat. But getting perfect IVs for all six stats is nearly impossible. You only have a one in 1,073,741,824 chance of doing that.

However, you can improve the chances of your Pokémon getting good IVs by breeding and producing lots and lots of eggs. If your parent Pokémon have good IVs, then there's a good chance the offspring will have good IVs too.

How can I find out what my Pokémon's IVs are?
You can use an IV calculator on the internet to find out your Pokémon's IVs. There are quite a few different calculators. Here are links to some:

Metalkid's IV calculator (considered to be the best out there)

Two others include:
Legendary Pokémon's IV calculator
Psypoke's IV calculator

There are two important things to note when calculating your IVs:

1. You have to know the EVs of your Pokémon. That's why it's better to calculate the IVs of Pokémon that have been newly caught or hatched, because those Pokémon start out with 0 EVs in every stat.

2. You'll get more accurate results if your Pokémon are at high levels. When your Pokémon are below Lv. 20, it's hard to get an idea of how good its IVs are. You'll get your most accurate results if you calculate Pokémon that are around Lv. 50 or above.

IVs in Red/Blue/Yellow/Gold/Silver/Crystal
In previous versions, IVs still existed. But instead of ranging from 0 to 31, they only ranged from 0 to 15. That meant it was a bit easier to get Pokemon with high IVs.
